The Chandlery is Celebrating Philadelphia Pride with Three Limited Edition Pride Candles Rooted in LGBT History
At The Chandlery, we believe in supporting our local LGBT artists, craftspeople, and community year-round. To celebrate Philadelphia Gay Pride Month 2021, we are releasing three limited-edition Pride candles that explore LGBT history and support local LGBT organizations in Philly. Here are our three prideful scents and the inspiration behind them.
Celebrating Pride with the Rainbow Flag
The History of the Rainbow Flag
The original rainbow flag was designed by openly gay artist and drag queen Gilbert Baker in 1978 to promote visibility and acceptance. The eight rainbow stripes have their own meaning, including hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit.
Philly’s Pride Flag Creates Inclusivity with 2 New Stripes
The Philadelphia Pride flag received an update in 2017 with two new stripes, including black and brown. The black and brown stripes sought to add an even deeper level of inclusion, representing black and brown members of the LGBT community.
The Chandlery’s Rainbow Pride Candle
Inspired by a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and support, The Chandlery team designed our Rainbow Pride Candle based on the message of the rainbow flag – it’s ok to be different! We support all members of our diverse community.
The History of the Stonewall Riots
The Stonewall Riots were a series of demonstrations in response to a violent police raid that began on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Patrons of Stonewall and other LGBT bars in the neighborhood fought back against an anti-gay legal system that criminalized sexual orientation. The Stonewall Riots are considered one of the most critical events in sparking a movement towards LGBT rights in the United States.
Stonewall Sports Unites Philly’s LGBT Community
The Stonewall Riots highlighted the importance of community and working together. The Chandlery is an LGBT-owned store, and we believe in supporting our local LGBT community through organizations like Stonewall Sports. Stonewall Sports is a community sports league dedicated to helping Philly’s LGBT community through safe spaces, donations, and service.
The Chandlery’s Stonewall Pride Candle
We designed our Stonewall Pride Candle with community support in mind. Twenty percent of Stonewall Pride Candle sales will be donated to Stonewall Sports.
Who’s Your (Leather) Daddy?
The History of the Leather Subculture
Leather harnesses and other accessories are synonymous with fantasy and sexual allure. But, many LGBT community members don’t know where the leather fetish came from. The leather daddy subculture actually first emerged after WWII and was partly formulated by men who explored their sexuality during their military service. These men rejected effeminate portrayals of homosexuality and instead embraced raw masculinity in the form of leather and motorcycle communities. Leather remains a popular and empowering subculture today.
Why Diversity is Important in the LGBT Community
When it comes down to it, everyone expresses their sexuality and gender differently. It is important to celebrate the diversity within the LGBT community during Pride and throughout the year.
Old City Canning Co.'s Leather Daddy Pride Candle
This year, the team at Old City Canning Co. decided it would be fun to create a candle that captured the essence of the leather daddy figure. Our Leather Daddy Pride Candle is our Pride 2021 ultra-luxe scent! Embrace your leather side or explore it for the first time.
